The dressage mare Dalivia (Spielberg x D-Day) was the highest scoring of the final evaluation of the year with a score of 82.5.

She was awarded 8.5 for the walk and trot and 8 for her canter.

Dalivia is the half sister of the Stallion Competition participant Vitalis (Vivaldi x D-Day) who is now in contention for a KWPN approval slot as a result of his performance in this series.

Mother Tolivia is an elite sport(dr) mare by the stallion D-Day who was purchased by Stal 104‘s Willeke Bos with Vitalis at foot. She was the mare champion of Limburg as a 3 year old.

Tolivia had two embryo transfers this season, both ended unsuccessfully – what would have resulted in full brothers to Vitalis.

In 2012 the breeders will put the mare in foal herself, to Vivaldi.

As a breeder, Bos commented that he was very pleased with Dalivia – who is a very long lined and quality mare.

In the previous year a daughter of Hotline came from this breeder and scored 86 in the EPTM.

“It depends on the mare weather we go down the EPTM line or take another route,” said Bos.

Dalivia is not currently in foal and will be aimed at the Pavo Cup.

Image: Chippendale (Lord Leatherdale x Negro) and Severo Jurado Lopez

L Level Round Up

The stallions from 4 upwards were all keen to make their mark in the annual stallion competitions.

In the four year old section in Roosendaal, Presidents Jack Sparrow (Johnson x Wolkentanz II) was pronounced unstoppable in Roosendaal. This stallion only managed to make the 2nd round of the KWPN viewings, but under the expert guidance of Edward Gal he took top sport at Roosendaal. This Oldenburg stallion is approved in Baden Wurttemberger.

Jury leader Gert van den Hoorn described him as a stallion with superb mechanism of movement and Edward Gal made reference to his strength and energy.

Scoring 9 for the trot and 9.5 for the canter he was let down by his walk which could have been more relaxed with movement through the body. Scoring a 7.5 for this page left him on 87 in total, some 2 points higher than the previous show.

Described as yet another “Totilas” – the third now since Bretton Woods – he will doubtless be back in Germany sometime soon!

Chippendale (Lord Leatherdale x Negro) and a KWPN approved stallion from 2010 made his mark, scoring 9.5 for his super expressive trot. A score of 8.5 for his canter results in a final score of 83 and a second place – an improvement of 2.5 over the first round score.

Third was Vitalis (Vivaldi x D-Day) under Hans Peter Minderhoud who scored 81.5. Vivaldi is from the mother Tolivia who is also the mother of top scoring EPTM mare Dalivia.

This a big improvement on his previous 5th place in Hengelo where he only managed 75.5

4 – Chagall D&R (Jazz x De Niro)

M Level Round Up

IPS Bon Bravour (Painted Black x Chronos) was triumphant in the M level competition under rider Tom Franckx.

Having dominated the first round in Hengelo his lead was not to be quite so convincing in the second round at Roosendaal.

Scoring an excellent mark of 83 to follow on from his previous 84.5 taking both rounds of the competition.

Rider Tom Franckx appear a little disillusioned over the mark for his horses walk.

“We are always told that the walk is great, but when do we get a 9 or a 10?” The walk was describe by the commentator as being particularly large and active with good body use, then awarded an 8.5!

The remainder of the field in the first round failed to make much of an impression. Bojengel (Uptown x Gribaldi) was the best of the rest, with 76.5 with Bristol (Jazz x Goodtimes)

In the second round, the competition was a little hotter.

The older type Briljant (Uphill x Darlington) were the runners up with a score of 8 for walk, 7.5 for trot, 8.5 for the canter and 8 for submission and impression making a total of 80 points. Canter was the highlight – described as natural particularly good.

Z Level Round Up

No prizes for guessing this level was dominated by the stunning Apache (UB40 x Krack C).

With a score of 88 in Hengelo, he followed this up with an 87.07 in Roosendaal. Trot scored 9.5 clearly putting this stallion in a class of his own.

All was not, however, perfect with his test. Particularly at the second competition he showed tension in the walk and was “noisy” throughout the test.

The walk on this stallion in competition does appear to be an issue – where he is stuck on a 7.5. I have not seen him in the flesh but I will be interested to see how he performs in February.

The temperament on Krack C breeding has always been a big issue for me – I hope this is not going to show through too much on this stallion.

ZiZi Top (Tango x Ferro) and Hans Peter Minderhoud were the runners up both times, first on 83.5 and then on 83

Amazing Star (Flemmingh x Ferro) put in a 79 and an 82 to build on the success of wining this final at M level last year.

Image : Astrix – World Champion 6 year old in 2011 and from NL-ML27

Each year the calculations are made by those with infinite knowledge of the blood lines of the top 300 dressage horses in the world.

The results of this latest table, covering the 12 months to 30th Sept 2011 make for interesting reading.

Previous dominant force NL-ML2 and the Jazz offspring including the likes of Parzival has dropped to 4th place.

The new number one is more a number one combination than motherline.

Westfalian line 218 is dominated by the Breitling W / Devisa cross which has produced no less than 4 horses featuring in the list. What is more, this cross has been successful 3 more times resulting in one small tour horse and two others yet to make the FEI circuit.

This could result in the most successful cross in dressage history – if this is not already the case now.

But does this make 218 the top motherline in the world at the moment – not in my book.

Second placed NL-ML27 takes that title for me and mainly because of the diversity of crosses that have lead to World class performance.

Even NL-ML2, the former champion, was dominated by the very successful stallion Jazz.

NL-ML27 takes its 6 representatives from 6 different crosses and for that reason it is the strongest from which to select both.

Of course, only certain mares in that line carry the performance genes – and they need to be matched to the correct stallions. but on the whole this gives us a direction to aim in.

This line is, of course, that of Carl Hester’s Uthopia and the none less formidable double world champion young horse Astrix.

That being said, this is all figures and not an analysis of the characteristics of horses – but it does give us something to do now the breeding season is finished and the weather not so nice!

Photo : Genetic Black (Jazz x full sister of Painted Black)

Foal auctions

There have been several foal sales since our last update.

Midden Nederland

Midden Nederland saw an average price of €6,341 for the KWPN foals, top price was paid for Gambo (Uphill x San Remo) at €25,000

Brabant

At Brabant the foals fetched good prices, with an average for dressage of €8,283.

The colt Gojengel G (Bojengel x Tuschinski), a well developed and strong trotting colt made €20,000 and this was the start of the bigger money for the foals.

Charmeur daughter Guinevere (Charmeur x Sarah prok ster by Ronaldo) NL-121, sold for €14,500. Her grand mother is Dolly keur pref prest (Ulster x Lorenz) who was the UTV champion two years running and scored a massive IBOP score of 93.

The show stopper for Brabant was the stunning Chippendale daughter Grace Subtilia from a mare by Sandro Hit.

When the hammer fell on her the princely sum of €29,000 was the price.

Germiek (Florencio I x Bormiek keur by Tuschinski ) from NL-027 made €15,000 and Furstentanz van Hof Olympia (Furst Romancier x Sandro Hit) made €12,000.

Maren-Kessel

At Maren-Kessel there were many normal prices. Top of the leader board was black filly Giulietta LE (Bordeaux x Zonique LE elite by San Remo), NL-052, who fetched €15,000. She is from the famous mother line of Unette – Ifradin – Refradin.

Google (Apache x Chiwanda by Santano) made €13,000 and a colt Generaal (Charmeur x Jazz) made €10,500

Gobarde E (Bretton Woods x Zilea by Scandic) was the final 5 figure sale making €10,000.

Average price for the sale was around €5,500 per foal.

Prinsjesdag

Dressage foals fetched an average of €8,500 with the top prices being realised by Genetic Black (Jazz x full sister of Painted Black) who made €25,000. Just €1,000 less was paid for the beautiful colt Gaudi Vita (Apache x Vita keur by Welt Hit II x Contango).

Three fillies made €15,000: Glowy (Ampere x Fruhling) NL-007, Golden Lady Texel (Totilas x Farmer) and Gorgeous Vurona (Furst Heinrich x Negro) NL-217.

Limburg

For the most part this was a jumping auction with only around 10 of the 70 foals on offer from dressage lines.

The standard was not that good, but there were some notable exceptions. The son of Bustique sold for €19,000 and was a super model of a jumping foal.

Gala (Apache x Rousseau) was 4th in the NVK and is sold to the UK

Lickley Horses managed to purchase the superb daughter of Apache – Gala for a bargin price. This filly is the top Apache daughter in Holland in 2011 having finished 4th in the National Foal Show earlier this year.

Her price was not reflective of her exceptional quality, more of the lack of dressage buyers in the auction.

Horse sales

The second KWPN stallion to be sold to the UK in the last couple of months is reported by horses.nl. Upper Class (Polansky x Doliena prest ster by Doruto x Okaliene keur pref) is sold to a British rider.

The deal was reported to have been brokered by the same team that oversaw the sale of San Remo – also to England.

EPTM First Test

The mare Danica SV (Johnson x Ruby pref ster by Krack C) passed her EPTM test with a score of 81. The mare received a consistent grade across the board. “The walk is very good and active. The trot is supple and has a beautiful foreleg technique, in the canter she makes a very nice picutre. A very agile horse with style!” said Sjef Van Rijswijk

KWPN Stallion Performance test

Seven dressage stallions start the 50 day stallion test in Stegeren this week.

Cat.no. 34: Hotline x Michelangelo
Cat.no. 36: Tuschinski x Tango
Cat.no. 38: Ufo x Jazz
Cat.no. 40: Valdezx Voltaire
Cat.no. 43: Vivaldi x Farrington
Cat.no. 44: Vivaldi x Havidoff
Cat.no. 46: Wynton x Ramiro

We will keep you posted on the status of this test.

Stallion Performance in the news

IPS Bon Bravour and Tom Franckx are the Belgian 5 year old champions on a score of 245.018

The old jumping champion BMC Kigali (Wolfgang x Finesse ster sport(spr) by Voltaire) produced a harmonious and relaxed test to score 70.6% in the Horse Event competition. Good enough for a win.

In Outdoor Brabant the KWPN stallion Wynton (Jazz x Acacia prok by Matador II) scored 73.42% in the PSG with Madeleine Witte-Vrees

Stallion Foal groups (B and C horses)

The full reports into the foal groups of the B (2006) and C (2007) stallions were carried out at the end of the summer.

As normal the foals are gathered in one place, commonly the home of the stallion owner, and are assessed in accordance with the linear model for both external type and movement.

25 random foals from his year group are selected and the scores of these offspring help to calculate the linear score of the stallion. Previously this was based on the stallions ancestors in the very early stages of a stallions breeding career.

In order to keep this as unbiased as possible, the scores of the mothers of the foals are taken into account.

By working in this way it is easier for the breeder to compare stallions based on this linear score model from a very early stage.

This is a change to the existing system in as much as previously such scores were only known when the stallion was in his 6th breeding season. By scoring the foals early indications of the merits of the stallion are known even before he begins his 3rd season.

The stallion commission can also call into question the usefulness of the stallion should he present a poor crop of foals, much sooner than under the old system.

Several dressage stallions were evaluated under this system and the results are shown here

Bojengel (Uptown x Gribaldi x Lector)
A collection of more than sufficient to well-developed, long-legged foals with more than sufficient dressage horse conformation.
The walk has sufficient stride length.
The trot has more than sufficient stride length with flat front leg use.
The canter has more than sufficient stride length.
The foals should move with more self-carriage and use their bodies more.

Bon Bravour (Painted Black x Chronos x Linards x)
A collection of more than sufficiently developed to well-developed, long-legged foals with sufficient dressage horse conformation.
The walk is pure and has sufficient stride length.
The trot and canter have more than sufficient stride length.
The foals should move with the wither more elevated and use their bodies more.

Breezer (Johnson x Sultan x Fresco)
A uniform collection of sufficiently developed foals with more than sufficient to good dressage horse conformation and presence.
The walk has more than sufficient stride length and sufficient elasticity.
The trot has more than sufficient stride length and elasticity.
The canter is light-footed with more than sufficient stride length.
The foals should move more uphill, but they use their legs correctly.

Cadans M (Sir Donnerhall x Pion x Elcaro)

A uniform collection of well-developed foals with more than sufficient dressage horse conformation and abundant presence.
The walk has sufficient length and elasticity.
The trot has more than sufficient stride length with good knee action.
The canter has good stride length and more than sufficient balance.
The hind leg needs to carry more, but the foals move with good carriage.

Carlton Hill VDL (Uphill x Vincent x Zebulon)

A uniform collection of more than sufficient to well-developed foals with sufficient dressage horse conformation but which should have more presence.
The walk has more than sufficient stride length and elasticity.
The trot has sufficient stride length. The canter has more than sufficient stride length.
The foals should move with more shoulder freedom, uphill balance, and better carriage.

Charmeur (Florencio x Jazz x Ulft)

A uniform collection of more than sufficiently developed, long-legged foals with more than sufficient dressage horse conformation and presence.
The walk has good stride length and more than sufficient elasticity.
The trot is light-footed and has more than sufficient stride length.
The foals pick up the canter easily and demonstrate more than sufficient stride length and balance.
The foals move with abundant carriage. Several should use their bodies better. A few move exceptionally well.

Even though only six Charmingmood foals were presented this year, the Stallion Selection Committee has opted to give a provisional abbreviated report on its findings.

Charmingmood (Winningmood x Contango x Belfalas xx)
A uniform collection of more than sufficient to well-developed foals with more than sufficient dressage horse conformation.
The walk has sufficient stride length.
The trot is powerful and has more than sufficient stride length, and the hind leg bends well.
The foals pick up the canter easily. The canter has more than sufficient stride length and balance but should be more elastic. The foals should show more knee action.

Chippendale (Lord Leatherdale x Negro x Landadel)
A uniform collection of sufficiently developed foals with presence and more than sufficient to good dressage horse conformation.
The walk is pure with more than sufficient stride length and sufficient elasticity.
This trot is light-footed with good stride length and more than sufficient carriage.
The canter has more than sufficient stride length.
The foals, in general, move uphill with good carriage

A day that began with high hopes and expectations delivered on all counts, a nice change for a day with horses!

To let you know from the outset, the KWPN grading show is not about flannel – it is about a true and sometimes cutting view on your horses. They don’t mess around and if it is rubbish they will tell you!

Starting with our wonderful Negro x Don Frederico colt Graffiti LH.

Graffiti LH impresses with his powerful canter

He put on a wonderful show and the KWPN grading committee commented on his good development and type.

Walk was given a good reach mark, the trot was sufficient reach with a powerful range of movement. The Canter was indicated as his best pace, with a good reach, powerful movement and nice posture and good balance.

Final comments – a good dressage type foal with a good front. 75 marks awarded and good enough for the reserve champion of the show and indeed reserve champion of all of the UK!

Diana 1053 was evaluated next. As a hanoverian mare we were anxious to get her approved by the KWPN studbook as we prefer to use dutch stallions.

Diana at the KPWN grading show

She showed herself off to a very high standard.

Achieving 70 for conformation and 75 for movement she not only did enough to become a studbook mare, she was immediately awarded the Ster predicate.

Final aim for the day was our new mare Tarava.

Already having proven herself in both the sport and breeding of competition horse, we were anxious she should get the highest accolade for a mare – Keur.

Tarava goes ELITE

Again she showed herself exceptionally well – a massive engaged trot with super hind leg.

She was immediately awarded the Keur predicate and thus by virtue of her current ster, prok, sport(dr) she became ELITE.

A super show with simply wonderful news on our fledgling dressage breeding programme.

A big thanks to the KWPN, all our Dutch friends and most importantly the horses and staff for doing such a wonderful job.

Diana will go back in foal early in 2012 – having decided to reset the cycle (getting later and later)

Tarava will be ridden until 2012 when we will decide to either carry on with her sport and do embryo with her, or put her back in foal herself.

Google (Bordeaux x Farrington)

At the Star Sale foal auction in Northern Holland, the dressage foals were fetching some appreciable prices.

Grandiazz (Jazz pref x Vega elite by Metall), a clot, fetched €10,500

Grootmeester (Charmeur x Beste Dieni keur by Flemmingh), a colt, fetched €16,500

Google (Bordeaux x Padegini elite sport(dr) by Farrington), a colt, fetched top price of €26,000

Go Chique (Apache x Zonique elite by San Remo), a filly, made €12,500

In Dronten the fortunes were mixed. Lots of very normal prices were punctuated by a €14,500 for a jumping foal and then the star of the show…

Goldberg (Amazing Star x San Remo)

Goldberg (Amazing Star x Whoopy Goldberg elite by San Remo) made the super price of €70,000.

A son of the upcoming ride of Theo Hanzon and World Championship competitor in 2011, Amazing Star, this colt is a product of a mother line descending from San Remo.

His mother was successful in the sport to M level and scored a very good IBOP of 8 for suppleness and build and 8.5 for posture and balance. Performance genes are also added by the presence of Jazz in the third generation.

He was sold to Germany.

Breeding Stallions

A mixture of ups and downs for the stallions this week.

The Hanoverians announced that 4 stallions were one step closer to approved status during the pre-selection trials in Deitersen, Germany.

Two sons of Fuerst Nymphenburg will interest the dressage breeders. The other two were jumping horses.

410 stallions have been registered for the pre-selection in the breeding area of Wesfalia.

The pre-selection day commences on the 5th October 2011 with two days of assessment prior to the four days in Munster later that month.

Sir Donnerhall, Lord Loxley, Fidertanz, Florenciano, Quarterback and Schumacher all have multiple representatives along with no less than 18 Dutch registered horses anxious for a piece of the action.

On the down side, the KWPN have thrown out some 7 stallions from the ability to compete in the Autumn stallion licensing in 2011.

From the dressage ranks Dacapo (Dreamcatcher x Reveil ster pref by Montecristo), Didando (Tuchinsky x Oilili pref prest by Jetset-D), Delando (Valdez x Tolanda elite pref by Krack C) and Dude (Vivaldi by Sarina ster PROK by Havidoff) were all for the chop.

The much discussed Dude was dismissed as his his behaviour was un-satisfactory and the shape of his feet were criticised.

An addition is the 2011 PAVO cup reserve champion Chinook (Vivaldi x Sarita keur pref by Havidoff) who is already licensed by the AES and will join his full brother DarkBoy in the running for KWPN Autumn stallion champion and the prize of becoming a KWPN approved breeding stallion.

Chapter Leatherdale (Lord Leatherdale x Wiegro elite sport(dr) by Negro) was approved by the NRPS. This stunning and super talented stallion was the winner of the PAVO Cup selection and was placed 10th in the final.

Other News

Several EPTM mare tests are running over the next few weeks – the results of these will be discussed in a round up of the whole EPTM series later in the year.

“The talented young stallion Chippendale combines the smoothness and lightness of father Lord Leatherdale and canter with the construction of a Negro dam sire. His first offspring seems very promising. This direct maternal line is known as the line of stallions San Remo (v.Wolkentanz I) and WeltGeist (v.Weltmeyer), two direct sons of great-Valente. Dam’s sire Sandro Hit was six year old world champion and is one of the most influential dressage stallions of the moment. Some products perform at Grand Prix level. In the third generation, Amerigo Vespucci xx makes the necessary blood input.”

The highly animated filly goes to the Dutch stables Onder de Linde in Aalsmeer.

This is the end of a great week for Chippendale, who also saw an excellent report on his foals from the KPWN and a good placing in the PAVO Cup.

After a rather difficult start to the auction, the first 7 foals failed to make more than €6,000 and one left the ring for €2,600, the bidding began in earnest with the dressage colt Gojengel G (Bojengel x Beaudea elite x Tuschinski) fetching €20,000.

Other notable dressage sales included

chestnut filly Germiek (Florencio x Bormiek keur by Tuschinski) for €15,000

brown filly Guinevere (Charmeur x Sarah ster by Ronaldo) a grand-daughter of the famous mare Dolly keur pref prest (Ulster x Vanessa keur pref sport(dr) by Lorenz) sold for €14,500

black colt Furstentanz (Furst Romancier x Sandro Hit) who went for €12,000.

Additional interest may have been generated for Germiek as she is from a super direct mother line – which descends from mother line 27. This line is responsible for the current European Team Gold Medallist Uthopia.

Eight foals made more than €10,000 but 27 foals were sold for around the €5,000 mark.

Total sales were €309,300 with an fairly low €6,186 average price.
