The Foals
The Borculo foal sales in Holland reported a significant increase in the value of foals sold in 2011.
Top priced foal Gambo (Charmeur x Originel keur sport(dr) by Kennedy) bred by Marijke Kool was sold for €74,000 plus 7% premium to the Blue Hors stud in Denmark. (Shown above)
Esben Moller was able to defeat the attempts at the Dutch alliance of Ad Valk and Joop van Uytert to purchase the colt.
Gambo is the half brother to his new stable mate Blue Hors Denzel who is approved in Denmark.
Blue Hors stud also purchased Giovanni BM (Apache x Ryanda elite sport(dr) pref by Belisar) for €33,000 and Gozer (Uphill x Blinca ster by Krack C) for €29,000.
The top priced filly made €60,000 when the hammer fell. Gaby (Jazz x Fiola elite by Furst Heinrich) bred by Herman Seiger had many fans.
Interest was high from foreign purchasers, to whom around 30-40% of the horses were sold.
My personal interest was in the filly Galante (Charmeur x Urona star Prok by Negro keur). From a super mother line, Charmeur is a stallion I have been interested in all year. Urona is a great daughter of the elite pref prest mare Murona.
Ranked as high as 29th on the KPWN mare list, Murona’s blood is from mother line 213, and has produced many many top horses. Included in this list is the 2011 foal champion Gregwaard who has the grand dam of Murona. Galante herself was 11th in the national foal show.
The €20,330 final sale price is a bit steep for my pocket, but never the less a very nice filly to a very lucky owner!
The Auction Statistics
The average price of €13,64 for colts and €11,152 for fillies lead to an average of €12,461 which is over €2,000 up on last year.
For those of us interested in purchasing young horses and foals, these type of auctions are often the bench mark to what happens down the line at the breeders.
Undoubtedly the prices were up this year, but the two very high priced foals made a huge difference to the overall picture.
The big difference on the raw figures is the deviation. Put simply this is used as a measure of how the data spreads from the average.
It nearly doubled in 2011, and in fact is actually not that far from the average price.
For 2011 this is €11,011 and was €6581 for 2010.
All this means is that this average price is not that reliable a benchmark for comparing to the previous years figures.
If we remove the top two priced horses from each auction we now get similar variations but the average is in fact around €2,500 higher in 2011.
The more reliable facts from this little bit of basic math is that in fact the average price this year is nearly 20% up on 2010 values excluding the very top couple.
Interestingly if we remove the two crazy prices from this auction and compare with 2010 – there is not a lot of difference between the years at all.
What will this mean in the real world?
Expect to be paying a little more for your foals – that goes without saying, but the huge prices are normally confined to the auctions.
Borculo is one of the most expensive auction for foals in Holland so is not all that good a guide for normal buyers however lots of very nice foals would have been purchased for under €15,000
Expect the foals from top offspring in the auctions to be fetching more money across the board – especially I suspect Charmeur who averaged a massive €30,750 over 4 foals.
As Tarava is not in foal this year I am seriously considering using him on her next season.
Jazz, well know and very established sire of dressage horses managed an average of €27,833.
Apache – recently in the news with his foals – realised average £14,750 in third place with Uphill €14,333 in fourth.
Totilas foals did not impress that well – averaged £12,875 but nothing like the big prices hailed in the press.
For young and relatively unproven stallions, the auction ground is an ideal place to put up their stall.
Interestingly when we look at the dam sire of the top priced foals, we find Negro held top spot on €15,000, closely followed by Krack C on €14,635 and Ferro on €12,666
Jazz does not fair so well on the dam side with an average of just around €9,000.
